Soyuzeless

Soyuzeless was my first attempt to create a model rocket that had any resemblence to something full scale.  It is reminiscent of the Russian Soyuz launch vehicle but only just barely.  The bodytube and booster strap-ons are made of cardboard tube, while the nosecone is a wrapped paper arrangement reinforced with some balsa strips.

Launch:

Because of the odd shape of this vehicle, estimating fin size was nearly impossible.  I took my best guess and took it out to fly.  First launch used a C6-5 motor.  The CG and CP were way off and this became apparent immediately after lift-off.  The rocket began tumbling and hit the ground about 10 feet from the launcher.  Bent fins and crushed cardboard was the result.  The rocket is not a complete write-off, and I will give it another try after adding some weight to the nose.

Length: 26"
Diameter: 2"
Weight: 6.5 oz
Recovery: 12" parachute
Engines: C6-5
Max altitude:  so far about 10 feet
